Clean and safe drinking water is one of the key targets in sustainable development (Sustainable Development Goals - SDGs). However, in reality, access to clean water is still difficult to reach for many people, particularly access to drinking water. This issue arises because the quality of water sources does not meet the criteria to be used as drinking water. From this problem, the idea to conduct a community service project emerged, aiming to improve access to safe drinking water by providing clean water treatment technology under the 3T Community Service Program for Eastern Indonesia - ITB and the Ministry of Village Development (Kemendes) in 2024. The village targeted for the development of this water treatment technology is Kalilam Village, Merauke, South Papua. Kalilam Village had previously received a borewell and water filtration system assistance from the Regent in 2013, but when the Regent's term ended, the equipment was left unused. When the borewell and filtration system were functional, the water source was used by the people of Kalilam Village and even in the Kimaam District (which includes 8 villages). To address this issue, the ITB community service group, led by lecturers from the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering (FTSL) – Rofiq Iqbal and Mohammad Farid, along with students from FTSL ITB, aims to provide a communal drinking water treatment system using an Ultra Filtration device. The community service activity began in August with a survey and observation of the existing conditions at the site, planning for the provision of drinking water treatment equipment, and the design and installation of the equipment in Kalilam Village by the end of 2024.
Solar Panels which are also applied in this activity also help provide clean water in addition to providing drinking water based on UF Membrane Technology
