Welcome to the Machine: Experimentation and Abstraction In the early 20th century, photographic practices began to enter the era of experimentation and abstraction in a visual approach which was influenced by the avant-garde movement in the world of art. Photography is also called having its own way in the process of chewing art. Engineering and Material Exploration in the Image Making Process became an experimental area to reveal something difficult to see with the naked eye and speak in silence, as if challenging artists to extract the potential of photographic media. "Why Should Not The Camera Also Throw Off The Shackles of Conventional Representation?" Alvin Langdon Coburn In addition to the camera that is a photography instrument, the material and the process is also the target of experiments in bringing up an image that tends to be abstract and away from the meaning of the subject of explicit. Techniques such as photograms, multi exposure, photomontage, photogravure and others, as if becoming an alternative experiment in displaying non-explicit images. Photographic practices in this era seem to try to stay away from mimesis and indexical properties. Besides material and technical exploration, this era known as 'Machine Age' also greatly affects the value of visual aesthetics in the image of photography produced. Engineering and Material Exploration conducted by artists in the era of this machine actually terminated to try to recognize photography as one of the mediums of art and experiments work carried out is expected to bring up aura of photography. A series of big names like Alexander Rodchenko, Lazlo Moholy-Nagy, El Lizzitsky, Man Ray, gave birth to a photography-based artwork based on the various experiments in this era. Some of them actually try to make works that eliminate the reproductive properties of photography. Zeitgeist from the era of the engine in the early 20th century could be called the Avant Garde movement in photographic media which continued continuously as the technological development was by artists. Photographic exploration and experiment continues to be joined both in discourse discourse and techniques to this day. However, the 'machine' mechanism that still has a contrary to the process of transforming photographic-based works is not uncommonage to cause controversy and negation in the visual art event, even though in this contemporary era the problem of specific medium elections is no longer the main debate. In a different context if we see the condition of photographic practices in the public region today dominated by industry and supported by technology, basically increasingly cut the process of transforming the creation of images and indexical properties actually tend to be increasingly dominant. But on the other hand it doesn't change the intention of photographic-based artists to keep experimenting with various techniques from conventional starting to the use of cutting-edge technology. At this exhibition, artists involved are invited to conduct experiments in various things without technical limitations in producing photographic images that no longer use conventional representations. Photographic challenges are no longer to achieve recognition in the art world, but more at achieving idiolek through technical experimentation, material and also aesthetic sensitivity with various approaches ranging from traditional to the latest technology.
