Activity Summary

This community service (PM) activity proposes the implementation of Disaster Resilience Schools as an effort to increase the resilience of coastal communities, especially educators and teaching staff, in responding to the impacts of natural disasters. The selection of SMKN 5 and SMKN 15, Garut district, are schools located on the Pameungpeuk Coast, South Garut Regency as locations for community service based on their geographical location which is vulnerable to natural disasters such as floods, landslides, earthquakes, climate change and tsunamis. In addition, active collaboration with government institutions, including the Region XI Garut Education Service Branch and the Garut Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) will be increased to improve coordination in disaster response. Collaboration between these agencies is necessary so that the program can run optimally.
This activity was carried out on 5 and 6 August 2024 in the form of education, training and disaster simulation activities with the main material being coastal disasters in the Garut Regency area. Training for teachers and staff at both schools was provided by Oceanography lecturers which was carried out simultaneously at both schools. Disaster education material for students was provided by 12 students from the Earth Science Study Program and Ganesha and Cirebon Oceanography Study Program who were divided into 2 large classes and who were representatives from various classes. The simulation is provided by BPBD.

The output of this community service is the implementation of training activities for teachers, teaching staff and students, as well as simulation exercises. Apart from that, coastal disaster teaching materials are available for students. Publicity that has been broadcast on social media at the Garut District Education Office Branch and online media around Garut.

The implementation of the Disaster Preparedness School is expected to create more resilient coastal communities so that they are able to respond better to disasters and minimize the negative impacts they cause. especially for students who are the nation's hopes. This will make a positive contribution to disaster prevention and mitigation efforts in Pameungpeuk, Garut. We hope that students can implement and disseminate to the community regarding the disaster preparedness school program, thereby creating community resilience and readiness in facing potential disasters in their area. One of the follow-ups to this activity on September 22 and 23 was a jamboree of 1000 Defending Nature Student Volunteers at SMKN 5 Garut.

Building a strong understanding of disaster preparedness, which is applied in the daily life of the school environment. Ensure that aspects of disaster preparedness become an integral part of students' education, and provide practical skills that can be applied in real situations. Creating an educational environment that not only educates but also increases the preparedness and resilience of the people of Pameungpeuk, Garut, especially in the vocational school environment.

As a follow-up to this activity, the XI Education and Culture Branch Office held a Jamboree of 1000 Student Volunteers Defending Nature (RPBA) on 21-22 September 2024 at the SMKN 5 Garut field. The OSLT KK itself has received great benefits in implementing oceanographic science related to coastal disasters. This activity is also a means of socializing the introduction to the Oceanography Study Program and FITB/ITB in general.
