Activity Summary

"Quartz sand is a non -metal mineral commodity containing silicon. Based on the 2018 PSDMBP data on non -metal mineral balance, Indonesia has a potential quartz sand resource of 24 billion tons which is spread in almost all regions of Indonesia. However, although Indonesia has great potential for solar panel raw materials, this has not yet made the solar panel industry in Indonesia quite developed. The level of purity needed to meet the requirements as the basic material of solar panels is more than 99 %, where the impurities consist of Fe, IT, Al, and others. Based on previous research (Widhiyatna et al, 2006; Prayogo and Budiman, 2009), the Bangka Belitung and Central Kalimantan regions have a high enough silica content (> 97%). When compared with Diatreme's Galalar Silica Project (Diatreme's Corporate Presentation, 2020), as a company that produces the purest silica content in the world, to produce high quality silicon, quartz sand bait is needed with a purity level of> 99.7% and contains Iron Oxide ( FE) is very small (<100 ppm). In addition, the specifications that can reduce electrical energy consumption in the process of separating silicone from the impurities are required quartz sand bait containing elements of aluminum oxide (Al) <1000 ppm, titanium dioxide (IT) <400 ppm, and distribution of particle size at 109-700 µm (98% particles in size 24-140 mesh). Therefore, to help the development of the upstream solar energy industry in Indonesia and reduce Indonesia's dependence on the import of solar cells, it is necessary to have data collection activities on the content or level of purity of silica from the quartz sand mining area in Bangka Belitung and Central Kalimantan. From the results of this activity it is known that quartz sand samples in the Bangka area contain silicon dioxide 69.817%-95.604%, Iron Oxide 11294.63–18014.22 ppm, Titanium Oxide 131.78–417.03 ppm, and aluminum oxide 2645.3 –17213.35 ppm. While quartz sand samples in Central Kalimantan contain silicon dioxide 97.91%-99.14%, Iron Oxide 6005-8864 ppm, Titanium Oxide 168.5-3603 ppm, and aluminum oxide 907-3212 ppm. So that quartz sand in the Bangka and Central Kalimantan regions does not meet the specifications as raw material for solar panels."
