Activity Summary

Sumpur Kudus Village is one of the villages in West Sumatra that is most active in carrying out activities to preserve its village forest area. The Sumpur Kudus forest area has an area of 4862 Ha with the potential for NTFPs (non-timber forest products) and extraordinary biodiversity. The community realizes that forests that store water are a source of life for them, therefore they are working hard to preserve their forests and this is also stated in the traditional regulations of Sumpur Kudus village.

Since 2018 they have been actively carrying out activities in Their forest areas include forest monitoring, inventory of forest potential, prevention of illegal logging, tree planting and planting and harvesting rattan. Until 2023, with the help of various parties they succeeded in establishing a forest patrol post in Sumpur Kudus village to make it easier for them to carry out activities in the forest area. Due to the difficulty of access and terrain in activities in this forest area, especially in planting and harvesting, this often becomes an obstacle for rattan farmers, where they often have to stay in the forest (post) for quite a long time and require an electricity supply but to bring a stun generator to in forest areas is very difficult and almost impossible. Therefore, patrol teams often have to go back to the village to recharge the power supply and then have to return to the forest area, which is very inefficient and makes the amount of raw rattan production not optimal.

In In 2024, through an official request via the Desanesha application, Sumpur Kudus village submitted a request for assistance for the development of a rattan nursery in the Sumpur Kudus area. A Modified Portable Pico-Hydro Power Plant for Harvesting Rattan in the Middle of the Sumpur Kudus Forest is really needed not only by Sumpur Kudus rattan farmers to simplify the process of planting and harvesting rattan in the Sumpur K forest area. Three lecturers are involved in this activity, namely the School of Electrical Engineering and Informatics (STEI) and the School of Life Sciences and Technology (SITH) and this activity also involved one MBKM S1 student as part of the implementation of Merdeka Belajar to actively contribute to field.

Testimonials

The main output of this activity is the Pico Hydro power plant which can be utilized by farmers in rattan harvesting activities. This activity can also produce intangible effects, namely increasing efficiency, safety and welfare of rattan harvesters. On the other hand, this activity makes it possible to obtain new information to be used in the development of Pico Hydro. This activity itself will be published on traditional media such as digital mass media and non-traditional mass media such as social media.
