This research focuses on the dynamics of multiphase CO2 flow phenomena in Carbon Capture Storage (CCS) and/or Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCUS) transportation system injection wells. CO2 injection in sub-critical and super-critical conditions and its dynamics affect well operating conditions where fluctuations in pressure and temperature need to be considered in selecting the type of subsurface material and equipment.
This research specifically examines the phenomenon of the Joule-Thomson Effect which causes the temperature of the injection fluid and subsurface well equipment to cool rapidly, especially when the fluid flow in the well is at transient condition.
This research aims to model, validate and test transient flow models and numerical solutions of multiphase CO2 flow and its effect on the integrity of CO2 injection wells.
