Activity Summary

Normal operation of a sedimentation basin flushing system requires large volume of water, usually up to ten times the volume of sediments that are deposited for efficient flushing. In sedimentation tub, however, complete sediment disposal, can only be realized by a combination of mechanical disposal with drawdown flushing. This operation reaches longer operating time, resulting in water loss and reducing the production of power and mini hydro power plants. Therefore, it is important to have an effective and efficient sedimentation basin. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the flow in sedimentation tubs using 3D models to assess the effectiveness of basins, and to improve the system of flushing the sedimentation basin system based on a numerical approach. The flow can be modeled using the continuity equation, momentum equation, and volume Fluid equations in Cartesian coordinates. All equations are formulated with extensive functions and volume porosity. This formula is called the Fractional Area-Volume Obstacle Representation (Favor) method, is used to model complex geometric areas. Sedimentation reservoirs are expected to accommodate a sediment with a diameter of 0.2 mm. The size of around 0.3 m / s is expected to allow this sediment to settle. It is known from the distribution of vertical speed that the amount of speed in the basin is less than 0.3 m / s. Therefore, the sedimentation tub is effective for sediments less than 0.2 mm. This shows that numerical 3D flow modeling in sedimentation basins provides reasonable results to predict suspended load movement in the flow. It is recommended to conduct a combined hydraulic simulation and sediment transportation to assess in more detail the effectiveness of sedimentation. Simulation can also provide an in-depth understanding of the rate of sedimentation in the basin.
