Activity Summary

This program is a continuation of the 2015 Community Service Program entitled "BambooFalatan as an alternative material for Jepara carving craftsmen" who have succeeded in proving that Bamboo Petung from West Java has the level of strength and violence that is suitable to be used as a basic material for carvings. The program produces several bamboo carving prototypes both using the KRawang (translucent) method (surface) and allow for development both in terms of motives, bamboo dimensions, and functions of the engraving. In addition, the mindset of craftsmen became increasingly open with the existence of new opportunities that they could develop in Jepara in the area of Senenan, Jepara was still one of the priority areas in this program because it has several carved experts who already have good relations through previous activities. This program tries to continue providing a value of more bamboo engraving that already exists by giving functions and applying it into the interior space. This is done with an emphasis to maintain and preserve the ability possessed by Jepara carving craftsmen so as not to disappear while re-intensifying the bamboo industry in Indonesia. Even with the design enrichment and the function used will increase the capabilities of craftsmen in the work. Constraints that may arise are the ability of adaptation owned by carved craftsmen to maintain and improve the quality of the carved bamboo produced. The adaptation process may require time, but it is expected that this is not a meaningful obstacle.

Testimonials

Senenan Jepara community is known to have good carving skills. But the obstacles are the dependence of craftsmen on timber as the main material. The availability of wooden base materials that are increasingly scarce results in the higher the price of timber in the market so that it exceeds the purchasing power of craftsmen. If this is left then it is not impossible that Jepara craftsman carving ability will disappear.
