Activity Summary

This proposal is submitted to the Research and Community Service Program of Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) through the ITB Community Service Program 2023, reflecting ITB's commitment to addressing challenges in 3T (underdeveloped, frontier, and outermost) areas. One of the target locations for ITB's 2024 community service program is Umera Village on Gebe Island, Central Halmahera Regency, North Maluku. The primary issue in Umera Village is the difficulty in accessing clean water. ITB has tasked Budi Sulistijo, Dr., M.App.Sc., Ir., to assist the community in meeting their water needs in a more accessible manner. The existing springs in the village are located in lowland areas near the coast, making it essential to assess the discharge capacity and sustainability of these water sources if larger volumes are extracted. Traditionally, spring discharge rates remain relatively stable with manual water collection methods. However, if more efficient water extraction systems are implemented, increased water usage may impact the condition of the springs. This proposal aims to study the spring discharge capacity, water quality, and catchment areas to ensure the sustainability of the available water sources. The next step will focus on designing a cost-effective and user-friendly water distribution system for the community. The plan involves constructing a second-order clean water installation, where residents can access clean water from communal distribution points. This approach enables the community to participate in building connections to their homes using their available resources and abilities. This initiative demonstrates ITB's and the relevant ministries' deep concern for the challenges faced by communities in 3T areas, emphasizing their commitment to improving the quality of life in these underdeveloped regions.
