The main initiative of this program is the introduction of picture story books as a tool to improve literacy, especially in the Lintongnihuta Siborongborong area. Reading stories through picture books can improve literacy skills, while accompanying illustrations support better cognitive development by supporting the text visually. Illustrations, which include elements such as character, setting, and composition, play an important role in engaging young readers emotionally and cognitively. Field testing with elementary school students from Pangkirapan and Tarabunga involved reading science-themed picture story books created by KIBA ITB students, followed by interactive questions and drawing activities to strengthen understanding. These sessions encourage critical thinking and creative expression, demonstrating that combining stories with hands-on activities enhances children's learning experiences.
In addition, the research team took part in the Balige Writer Festival from 25 to 28 July 2024, where they held an illustration exhibition entitled [insert exhibition title]. This event is a collaboration with Kelir Community, Lets Read, and Erlangga Books, further promoting literacy and education initiatives in the region.
