Activity Summary

Chemistry is one of the basic areas of expertise that must be studied by Vocational High School (SMK) students. This is stated in the mandate of the Director General of Primary and Secondary Education Regulation of the Ministry of Education and Culture number 07/D.D5/KK/2018 concerning the curriculum structure of Vocational High Schools (SMK)/Vocational Madrasah Aliyah (MAK). An important part of the chemistry learning method is understanding concepts through experiments carried out in chemistry practical learning. Motivated by the request of one of the ITB alumni who is also the founder and supervisor of SMK Plus Rasana Rasyidah, the Organic Chemistry KK has considered taking an active role in the process of developing the basic competencies of SMK Plus Rasana Rasyidah students so that they can become quality graduates by participating in the development chemistry modules, especially those related to organic chemistry.

Sacha inchi (Plukenetia volubilis L.), otherwise known as inca beans, is a plant native to the Amazon rainforest. high economic value because the seeds are rich in oil containing omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acids. In addition, sacha inchi contains various secondary metabolites such as polyphenols, phytosterols, tocopherols, saponins, and tannins, which have an important role in plant adaptation and provide health benefits. Polyphenols, especially flavonoids, are known for their antioxidant activity which can ward off free radicals and protect cells from oxidative stress. The bioactivity of sacha inchi has attracted attention as an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer agent, with its flavonoids shown to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and some types of cancer. This study aims to analyze the total levels of phenolics and flavonoids in the ethanol extract of sacha inchi seeds and seed coats to understand more deeply the benefits of their bioactivity.

Target

increasing students' understanding of SMK Plus Rasana Rasyidah, Garut regarding chemistry subjects, especially organic chemistry through the topic 'determination of total phenol content of Sacha inchi oil'. The target of the activity is the preparation of an integrated module which includes classroom learning modules and practical modules related to total phenol analysis.

Testimonials

Providing knowledge for vocational school teachers and students regarding plant phytochemistry including quantitative tests of total phenolics and total flavonoids as a basis for determining plant bioactivity. Apart from that, this activity also brings ITB closer to the student community in the region.
