Activity Summary

The concept of developing assisted villages in island areas is one of ITB's community service programs through strategic partnerships that was carried out the previous year. In 2024, the service team will carry the theme Synergy of Maritime Potential and Cultural Traditions for the Development of Creative Industries. The continuity of the service program in 2024 places greater emphasis on village development efforts to develop the creative economic potential of residents through an interdisciplinary approach. The main target of this service activity is based on the development of natural components, by integrating factors; landscapes, beaches, rivers, hills, rice fields and forests in designing and changing an island village into a more productive nuance that is able to provide various added values for the community. The residents of Parit Village are very interested in a catfish land fish hatchery business model that suits the geographical conditions of the island. This activity aims to spread useful knowledge to understand how far the various natural potentials of the archipelago are accessible, including how the residents are able to see the potential of the market economy towards their needs. The supply of land and sea fish protein is still relatively high in Karimun Regency and the surrounding island areas.

The method used to support this activity is a participatory design approach by introducing a framework for understanding an activity or new product that they themselves have never experienced or created. This is done so that the residents of Parit Village are helped to understand their problems more clearly and know why they choose and make and make new products, so that they understand what the next steps should be if they find new problems, especially regarding products that are integrated with food potential in the fisheries sector. . The workshop implementation phase and other activities in the field were carried out twice on 2-4 May 2024 and 14 -18 July 2024 at residents' home areas involving the Parit Village government as facilitators.
The activity produces several points, namely: Firstly, teaching a mode of cultivating catfish using structured knowledge and mastery of fish hatchery technology that is applicable to certain geographical conditions. The real impacts of this activity include: Making water flea media as the main substance as well as the main element of the food source for catfish seeds which must be prepared in advance from the start; The practice of catfish hatching, where some residents of Parit Village have now mastered the basic principles of theory, methods and techniques used during the catfish hatchery process; preparing ponds, measuring water temperature, selecting superior seeds, caring for eggs, and producing larvae. Second, providing relevant technical skills in the field of food security by teaching catfish hatchery techniques and practices to village residents Ditch by utilizing the potential of surrounding natural resources. Third, providing other technical skills in the form of an introduction to simple plant motif monoprint techniques for elementary school children.Fourth, providing village residents' understanding of the context of natural resource sustainability through the use of village land to become more efficient and productive. For example, the seeding and planting of local flowers which were planted in the garden area of Parit Village Primary School for 25 students. Fifth, fostered the growth of the mindset of Parit Village residents to start a possible new tradition that integrates every problem they face in the region involves the role of universities. One example is the service team's activity in making a 2-dimensional mock-up of the main gate icon of Parit Village. This design idea attracted the attention of the Head of the Karimun Regency Regional Government, considering the uniqueness of the idea which was directly inspired by the form of a local endemic animal, namely the Tembakul fish which is widely distributed along the coast of Parit Island.

Target

Development of economic and cultural potential based on the islands' maritime natural wealth which has an impact on the economic, social and cultural traditions of the Karimun community.

Testimonials

This service activity has opened up opportunities for cross-disciplinary collaboration between faculties and universities as well as local government agencies, in particular showing the role and ideas of academics in answering community problems in the outermost regions of the Republic of Indonesia This service activity provides alternative ideas that are quite relevant to help solve regional food security supply chain problems. This kind of activity has a positive value in changing the perception of Parit Village residents regarding the real care and attention of relevant government institutions, the benefits of which can be seen and felt directly down to the grass roots. This activity benefits from its location close to the offices of strategic government institutions such as the Regional Government and local Customs and Excise, as well as potential social networks for plans to develop more productive collaboration programs between institutions.
