West Nusa Tenggara Province is one of the provinces that is rich in potential mineral resources. Based on data from GeoRIMA, the Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, the potential mineral resources found in West Nusa Tenggara Province include the metal commodities gold, copper, silver, iron, manganese and titan. Apart from that, West Nusa Tenggara Province also has potential non-metallic mineral resources such as bentonite, andesite, sirtu, limestone and quartz sand. Referring to the 2022 Indonesian Reserve Balance Book (PSDMBP, 2023), the total amount of gold metal reserves in Nusa Tenggara is 276 tons, copper metal reserves are 3.13 million tons, primary iron ore reserves are 847 thousand tons, manganese 3 metal reserves are 109 thousand tons. The existence of potential mineral resources in West Nusa Tenggara can not only be a blessing for the surrounding community, but can also be a disaster if not managed and exploited properly. In West Nusa Tenggara Province, there have been many cases of illegal gold mining which, apart from causing environmental damage, also result in loss of life. This happens because mining activities do not pay attention to security, health, work safety and the environment. In their mining activities, illegal miners use mercury and cyanide. The remaining mercury and cyanide resulting from gold processing are discharged directly into rivers and cause pollution to water bodies. Until now, miners are still guided by the belief that the more mercury used in the processing process, the more gold they can obtain. This is of course very dangerous for the health of miners and communities around water bodies who use water from polluted rivers/water bodies for their daily needs. A comprehensive understanding of the potential of mineral resources, as well as awareness of good management of these resources, is very important to convey and emphasize to students from the Mining Engineering Study Program at existing regional universities. This needs to be done considering that students are local people who will later become the next generation in managing the resources in their area. Apart from that, students who act as driving agents are also expected to be able to disseminate the knowledge and understanding they have gained to the surrounding community, so that the socialization carried out can have a wider impact in the future. In carrying out this activity, the community service team collaborated with partners from the Mining Engineering Study Program, Muhammadiyah University of Mataram.
Carrying out socialization activities "Consolidating Understanding of Resources and Good Management of Mining Excavated Materials" to students of the Mining Engineering Study Program, Muhammadiyah University of Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara. It is hoped that students as local people who will become the next generation who will manage the natural resources and potential of West Nusa Tenggara Province have a good and correct understanding and knowledge regarding the potential of mineral resources in West Nusa Tenggara Province and the principles of mining/good management of these resources. Students as objects of activity are also expected to become local agents as mobilizers who spread the knowledge and understanding they have gained to the surrounding community, so that the socialization carried out can have a wider impact in the future. It is hoped that this activity can help provide better insight and perspective regarding mining activities and mineral resource exploitation in West Nusa Tenggara Province. Through this activity, students involved as a team are expected to learn to go directly into the field and learn to convey the knowledge they have learned according to their scientific field. Apart from that, through the field activities held, it is hoped that ITB students will be able to socialize and network with students from other universities (especially Muhammadiyah University of Mataram).
By carrying out this activity, it is hoped that students of the Mining Engineering Study Program, Muhammadiyah University of Mataram as local people who will later participate in the management of mineral resources in West Nusa Tenggara Province have a good and correct understanding and knowledge regarding the potential of mineral resources in Nusa Tenggara Province. West and the rules of mining/good management of these resources. The output of this service activity is in the form of a final activity report, publicity in the mass media, and video documentation of the activity.
