Workshop on Increasing Scientific Literacy for High School Teachers in Muna Regency through Creative Learning Methods

Community service workshop was held on October 12 2024 in Raha, Muna Regency, Sulawesi Southeast, Indonesia. This workshop aims to increase scientific literacy among high school teachers through creative learning methods. Apart from that, the workshop was also attended by class 12 high school students who took part in sessions to share experiences and increase high school students' motivation to study chemistry. A total of approximately 60 teachers and more than 60 students from various high schools in Muna Regency participated. The teachers and students who attended were representatives from state high schools in Muna Regency, namely from SMA Negeri 1 Raha, SMA Negeri 2 Raha, SMA Negeri 1 Lohia, SMA Negeri 1 Watoputih, SMA Negeri 1 Kontunaga and SMA Negeri 1 Napabalano.

This workshop, which was initiated by the Biochemistry and Biomolecular Engineering Expertise Group of the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), responded to the challenge of improving critical, analytical and innovative thinking skills in science education in the area. The workshop program includes several key sessions:

  • Sharing Experiences and Motivation: Academics and educators share their experiences in science education, motivating teachers to foster a love of science in students. This session also includes demonstrations of interesting chemistry experiments using simple and accessible materials.
  • Creative Chemistry Learning Methods: The workshop introduces innovative teaching strategies, including an encouraging introduction to ITB's Chemistry Teaching Masters program professional development. Participants learn interesting basic chemical concepts, overcome common misconceptions, and integrate real-world chemical applications, such as in the mining field.
  • How to Make Good Questions/Assessments: This session focuses on effective assessment methods, methods of creating questions that can test students' abilities well, equipping teachers to make relevant and comprehensive evaluations to measure students' understanding accurately.
  • Application of AI in Creative Learning: Workshop explores the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in improving the quality and efficiency of learning, demonstrating tools that can save time and provide a personalized learning experience.

The workshop received a positive response, with teachers feeling more confident in implementing innovative teaching strategies and making effective use of AI. The success of this program shows the potential for replication and expansion to improve science education in other areas. The long-term impact on science education in Muna Regency is expected to be significant, contributing to increased student understanding and engagement in science.
