Particulate air pollution (particulate air pollution/PAP) is a widespread danger because exposure to this pollution can occur indoors or outdoors. The impact of air pollution affects people's lives physically and psychologically. Compared to adults, children are considered more vulnerable to the effects of exposure based on their ability to protect themselves, the amount of need for outdoor activities, and knowledge regarding exposure to air pollution. Various solutions can be offered to reduce exposure to PAP, one of which is the practice of using masks, fulfilling the criteria for healthy homes and buildings, avoiding activities outside the home when air quality worsens.
PAP can come from various sources, including from transportation, fossil fuel power plants, industrial activities, mining activities, even domestic household activities (Figure 1). Apart from that, PAP can also come from nature, such as volcanic eruptions or forest fires. Communities living in coal mining environments and potential forest fires, such as communities in East Kalimantan Province, have the potential to be exposed to various types of PAP. In 2023, there was a forest and land fire on Sunday, 27 August 2023 at 14.00 WITA in Jone and Tepian Batang Villages, Tanah Grogot District, Paser Regency, East Kalimantan with an area of burned land of 16 Ha.
Mrs. Nusantara City (IKN) which is located in East Kalimantan Province carries the concept of smart and sustainable city, where the city is built with a smart concept and pays attention to environmental aspects and environmental health. Apart from that, IKN was also built by paying attention to the community around IKN. Apart from the community, workers in the IKN environment are also at risk of receiving PAP. These particles are very dangerous when inhaled because they will settle in the alveoli. This will cause chronic lung inflammation and gradually form scar tissue. Based on the facts of the risk of PAP exposure from both development activities and forest fires that may occur in East Kalimantan, a community service program is proposed to increase literacy regarding the dangers of PAP risks and mitigate the impact of the risk of PAP exposure with the program targets namely the community around IKN and workers who work in the construction of IKN.
Providing knowledge to the public regarding the dangers of PAP exposure and the criteria for a healthy home based on Minister of Health Regulation Number 2 of 2023 concerning Implementing Regulations of Government Regulation Number 66 of 2014 concerning Environmental Health. Increase public awareness regarding exposure to PAP that may arise from development activities or forest fires. Evaluate ambient air quality in residential areas near IKN construction. Reduce exposure to PAP using air filter equipment in one of the worker's residences
This project provides the following benefits: 1) ITB is known for its concern for air quality in the IKN Construction Worker Residential (HPK) environment 2) ITB contributes to basic services for workers in the IKN environment
